At the annual Avon Tennis Awards ceremony Backwell Tennis Club received the prestigeous Community Club of the year award for Avon and the surrounding areas. Receiving the award on behalf of the club are Pippa Barry; ladies captain, together with committee members David Howells, John Lurie, Steve Stephens and Patrick O’Callaghan.
The award is given to the club that has achieved the following highest standards providing tennis to the local community:
• Excellent organisation and financial stability with long term plans for the provision of tennis.
• Excellent tennis sessions that meet the needs of players of all ages, abilities and backgrounds including social and league play.
• Has found creative ways to engage with the community.
• Growth in the number of people playing, watching or volunteering.
Club Chairman Richard Gaunt, said “This award also is a fantastic recognition of the outstanding youth and outreach work carried out by the coaching staff under head coach Ben Tilling.”
The coaching team delivers coaching to 350 people a week at the club and more than 100 per week through the schools’ programme. 9 schools now benefit from the outreach programme with 10 lunchtime and afterschool clubs during term time to over 500 children in total.
One of the main reasons for the success in the schools coaching is because Backwell Tennis Club was one of only two clubs in Avon to receive a grant from the LTA for the schools programme, making this the largest community club for juniors in Avon.
Holiday courses are also provided for children with 3 weeks of summer camps and coaching at Easter, Spring Bank Holiday and October Half Term.
