Finals Weekend Report 2019

Backwell Tennis Club Finals Weekend Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th September 2019

Backwell Tennis Club enjoyed a wonderful finals weekend with lots of high-quality tennis on show over the weekend. With over 30 finals scheduled for the two days, the weather played its part staying dry, warm & at times sunny.

The finals weekend is a huge part of the Backwell Tennis Club fixture list and also in the community. Large numbers of spectators attended over the two days to watch. From 8&U through to the Random 60+ the club showcased its community qualities offering an event for everyone to enjoy. The club also ran free catering, refreshments, cakes & a BBQ where over 300 hotdogs were enjoyed.

It was agreed by many that the finals weekend was stolen by the juniors this year, who showcased their games on the highest level. From Mini Tennis to 16&U the performances were very high. Indeed, the eventual Men’s Singles Champion, Ben Jones, is a 16-year-old that trains & coaches within Backwell’s coaching programme. Ben, a semi finalist last year, has shown huge improvement & in an entertaining singles final he beat last year’s winner, Stuart Beaver, 6-4 6-3. The ladies final was a repeat of last year & had the same outcome with Ali Simpson beating Jude Barker 6-2 3-6 6-3 in a tight match lasting over two hours.

The Men’s Doubles final was won for a third year by Stuart Beaver & Henry Hoult, who beat coach Tom Jackson & upcoming junior Joe Wild 6-2 6-4 in a high-quality match. The Ladies Doubles was a repeat of last year with Jude Barker & Zoe Fearnley v Ali Simpson & Julie Wild, but it was a different outcome with Zoe & Jude coming through this year 6-3 6-4. Finally, the Mixed Doubles champions of 2018 Stuart Beaver & Zoe Fearnley came through a tight match & spirited challenge from Tom Jackson & Susan Bower, eventually winning 6-4 7-6.

There were many other wonderful matches over the two days in all age categories, but perhaps a fitting way to finish the 2019 finals weekend was the final match to be completed. The boys 16&U final was contested by Men’s Champion Ben Jones & up coming junior Joe Wild. Both boys played some really fantastic tennis with Ben eventually winning 6-2 6-7 10-8. All those who had stayed until just after 7pm on the Sunday evening agreed it was the match of the tournament & both boys should be proud, as should the club with so many juniors coming through.

As always there are too many people to thank individually but a huge thank you must go out to all those who helped over finals weekend & a particular thank you to Malcolm Barnes for all his extra work in scheduling such a wonderful event. Backwell are proud to host one of the largest finals’ weekends in Avon & the surrounding counties & with the club going from strength to strength long may it continue.
